Polar Bear Adventure

October 6, 2009 we are headed to the wilds on northern Canada to witness a truly great event, the fall gathering of Polar Bears. Each fall these massive creatures gather on the shore of Hudson Bay to await the freeze up of the bay so they can make their way north in pursuit of their prey, the Arctic Seals.

We tried unsuccessfully for two years to put together a caravan but the commercial tour companies have all the accommodations for train, hotel, and Tundra Buggies booked solid for the next ten years. Adventure Caravans gave us the opportunity to purchase their only trip in 2009, but we had to act fast. One couple was already booked with Adventure but that turned out to be one of our members, Wilt and Barbara Greenwood. At our meeting in Lancaster, California we offered the caravan on a first come – first serve basis in order to fill the trip and not have non members sign up through Adventure Caravans. We have space available for two more couples and then we will start a waiting list, call John or Rita Ham at 970-927-3273 to reserve your place on the trip of a lifetime.

The caravan will start in Winnipeg, Canada with 3 days and 2 nights at the luxurious Fort Garry Hotel and many activities in this exciting city. You may arrive by car, motorhome, or air. Next will be a two night, one day train trip, with sleeping compartment, north to Churchill, Manitoba on the shore of Hudson Bay. After two nights in the hotel in Churchill, and many activities around town, we will spend the next two days and one night out on the tundra in specially built Tundra Buggies. They have even fashioned a Tundra Buggy Lodge out there with the Polar Bears where we will spend the night. Wonder if we will get any sleep? We then fly from Churchill to Winnipeg in the early evening, spend the night at a hotel near the airport, farewell breakfast the next morning, then it’s hugs and goodbyes.

But wait, the adventure may not be over. A number of members are planning to drive their motorhomes to Winnipeg and continue the caravan after leaving Winnipeg. One group is planning to head east toward the homecoming in Greensboro and the other group is heading west toward Banff, the Canadian Rockies, and Vancouver, enjoying the sights and activities enroute while in the company of great friends.

The cost for this nine day adventure is still a little uncertain. The worst case is their advertised price of $7390 per couple, minus $75 discount. Adventure Caravans has agreed to us serving as tailgunners and that savings, about $400 per couple, would be deducted but they felt they may be able to do even better.
